International Death Literacies Network
The International Death Literacies Network aims to unite individuals working on Death and other End of Life literacies to learn from and inspire each other, and to collaborate on projects together. The network is chaired by founding members Prof. Steven Vanderstichelen, Prof. Libby Sallow, and Dr. Kerrie Noonan. They also organize an annual Death Literacies Symposium. Previous symposia have been held in London 2024 (UCL, UK), Brussels 2025 (VUB, Belgium), and Breda 2026 (Avans, Netherlands). The next symposium will be held in Kerala, India in 2027.
PHPCI promotes practice learning, professional support, and facilitates local and international communication between members around the world in their individual attempts at embedding a public health approach to the practice of palliative care. Since 2023 Prof. Luc Deliens is president of the PHPCI.
The United Nations has declared the period from 2021 to 2030 as the Decade for Healthy Aging. In this context, a new Lancet committee was established: Long-Term Care for Older Persons, which includes Prof. Lieve Van den Block. The committee will strive to develop a roadmap on person-centered long-term care for the elderly so that they can regain their rightful place in society. The focus is on person-centered care as a fundamental part of human rights. A comprehensive palliative care approach is also an important part of this.
